How old is your cat?
Young Adult
Your cat is in the young-adult stage, a period of physical maturity and generally active adult life.
What does this number mean? Your human-age result is an approximate comparison rather than a measurement of your cat's health or biological age. Cats mature especially quickly during their first two years, so their age does not convert accurately using a simple “multiply by seven” formula.
Cat Years to Human Years
| Cat age | Approx. human age | Life stage |
|---|---|---|
| 1 year | 15 years | Young adult |
| 2 years | 24 years | Young adult |
| 3 years | 28 years | Young adult |
| 4 years | 32 years | Young adult |
| 5 years | 36 years | Young adult |
| 6 years | 40 years | Young adult |
| 7 years | 44 years | Mature adult |
| 8 years | 48 years | Mature adult |
| 9 years | 52 years | Mature adult |
| 10 years | 56 years | Senior |
| 12 years | 64 years | Senior |
| 15 years | 76 years | Senior |
| 20 years | 96 years | Senior |
Cats do not age at a simple rate of seven human years for every one cat year. Their development is much faster during the first few years of life and then becomes more gradual. That is why a 1-year-old cat is already roughly equivalent to a 15-year-old human, while a 10-year-old cat is around 56 human years.
Cat Years to Human Years: The Quick Answer
If you have ever wondered, “How old is my cat in human years?”, the answer depends heavily on the cat’s age.
The first year is particularly important. Cats mature rapidly during their first year, reaching an age comparable to a human teenager. Their second year represents another substantial jump, after which the conversion becomes much more gradual.
Here are some useful reference points:
| Cat age | Approximate human age |
|---|---|
| 3 months | 4 years |
| 6 months | 10 years |
| 1 year | 15 years |
| 2 years | 24 years |
| 3 years | 28 years |
| 4 years | 32 years |
| 5 years | 36 years |
| 6 years | 40 years |
| 7 years | 44 years |
| 8 years | 48 years |
| 9 years | 52 years |
| 10 years | 56 years |
| 11 years | 60 years |
| 12 years | 64 years |
| 13 years | 68 years |
| 14 years | 72 years |
| 15 years | 76 years |
| 16 years | 80 years |
| 17 years | 84 years |
| 18 years | 88 years |
| 19 years | 92 years |
| 20 years | 96 years |
| 21 years | 100 years |
These figures are based on the cat-to-human age equivalency chart published by the American Association of Feline Practitioners/FelineVMA.
Why Cat Age Does Not Work Like “1 Cat Year = 7 Human Years”
The familiar “multiply it by seven” idea is easy to remember, but it does not describe feline development very well.
A young cat changes dramatically during its first two years. A one-year-old cat is no longer comparable to a one-year-old child. By about one year of age, a cat has reached a level of maturity that is much closer to a human teenager.
After the first couple of years, the difference between one additional cat year and one additional human year becomes much more consistent.
That is why this calculator uses a non-linear cat age conversion rather than simply multiplying your cat’s age by seven.
Understanding Your Cat's Life Stage
A cat’s birthday tells only part of the story. Veterinary organizations also divide feline life into broader stages because the needs of a young kitten are obviously different from those of an older cat.
Kitten — Birth to 1 Year
The kitten period is a time of rapid physical and behavioral development.
Nutrition, vaccination, parasite prevention, socialization, dental development and regular veterinary care are particularly important during this period.
The FelineVMA defines a kitten as a cat from birth through 1 year of age.
Young Adult — 1 to 6 Years
Your cat is now in the young-adult period.
Many cats in this stage are active, playful and physically mature. However, being young does not mean preventive healthcare should be ignored. Routine examinations remain an important part of lifelong care.
Mature Adult — 7 to 10 Years
Between 7 and 10 years, cats enter the mature-adult stage under the 2021 AAHA/AAFP feline life-stage framework.
This is a useful age range for paying closer attention to gradual changes in weight, activity, appetite, behavior, dental health and daily habits.
Senior — 10 Years and Older
The 2021 feline life-stage guidelines classify cats aged 10 years and older as senior.
Senior does not automatically mean unhealthy. Many older cats continue to have a good quality of life for years. However, age-related changes become more important to monitor.
The FelineVMA recommends at least twice-yearly examinations for senior cats as part of its feline life-stage guidance.
How Old Is My Cat Compared With Me?
Here are a few examples that make the conversion easier to picture:
6-month-old cat → about 10 human years
Your kitten is already comparable to a child approaching adolescence.
1-year-old cat → about 15 human years
Your young cat is roughly comparable to a human teenager.
2-year-old cat → about 24 human years
By the second year, your cat has reached an approximate young-adult human equivalent.
5-year-old cat → about 36 human years
The conversion becomes much more gradual after the first two years.
10-year-old cat → about 56 human years
Your cat has entered the mature/senior portion of feline life.
15-year-old cat → about 76 human years
A 15-year-old cat is an older animal and deserves closer attention to changes in health, mobility, appetite and behavior.
20-year-old cat → about 96 human years
Reaching 20 is a remarkable milestone for a cat. The human-year comparison helps put that age into perspective.
