How Much Pea Gravel Do I Need?

If you are planning a pea gravel patio, walkway, driveway, garden path, or landscaping project, one of the first questions to answer is how much pea gravel do I need? Buying too little can leave you making another trip, while buying too much wastes money and leaves you with extra material.

The amount of pea gravel you need depends mainly on the length, width, and depth of the area you want to cover.

How to Calculate How Much Pea Gravel You Need

Start by measuring the area in feet:

Length × Width × Depth = Volume

If your measurements are in feet, the result is cubic feet. Since pea gravel is commonly sold by the cubic yard, divide the cubic feet by 27:

Cubic yards = Length × Width × Depth ÷ 27

Remember to convert the gravel depth from inches to feet first.

For example, if you have a 20-foot-long area that is 10 feet wide and you want 2 inches of pea gravel:

  • Length: 20 feet

  • Width: 10 feet

  • Depth: 2 inches = 0.167 feet

So:

20 × 10 × 0.167 = 33.4 cubic feet

Then:

33.4 ÷ 27 = 1.24 cubic yards

You would need approximately 1.25 cubic yards of pea gravel.

How Deep Should Pea Gravel Be?

The recommended depth depends on how the area will be used. A light layer may work for decorative landscaping, while walkways and areas with more traffic generally need a deeper layer.

Common depths include:

  • 1–2 inches: Decorative landscaping and light coverage

  • 2–3 inches: Garden paths and walkways

  • 3–4 inches: Areas that receive heavier use

If you are installing pea gravel over soil, you may also need to consider ground preparation and a landscape fabric or suitable base material.

Add Extra Pea Gravel for Waste

It is usually a good idea to order slightly more than the exact calculated amount. Uneven ground, settling, spillage, and differences in the actual gravel depth can increase the amount required.

Adding around 5–10% extra is often a reasonable starting point.

For example, if your calculation gives you 1.25 cubic yards, you may want to order around 1.3–1.4 cubic yards, depending on the project.

Use a Pea Gravel Calculator

Manually calculating gravel can be confusing when your measurements are in feet and inches. A pea gravel calculator can quickly estimate the amount you need by using the length, width, and depth of your project.

Enter your measurements, check the recommended depth for your application, and consider adding a small amount for waste before ordering.
