Pixel to Inches Converter

If you need to turn a pixel measurement into inches, the important detail is pixel density. A pixel does not have one universal physical size: the same number of pixels can represent different physical dimensions depending on the DPI/PPI setting.

This Pixel to Inches Converter lets you enter a pixel value and a resolution, then calculates the equivalent size in inches instantly. It is useful for image dimensions, graphic design, printing, web projects, screenshots, and preparing files for physical output.

How it works: Inches = Pixels ÷ DPI. For example, 1920 pixels at 96 DPI equals 1920 ÷ 96 = 20 inches. For printing and image sizing, use the actual PPI/DPI associated with your project rather than automatically assuming 96 DPI.

How to Convert Pixels to Inches

The calculation is straightforward:

Inches = Pixels ÷ DPI

For example, at 96 DPI:

  • 96 pixels = 1 inch
  • 192 pixels = 2 inches
  • 384 pixels = 4 inches
  • 768 pixels = 8 inches

At 300 DPI, the result is different:

  • 300 pixels = 1 inch
  • 600 pixels = 2 inches
  • 1200 pixels = 4 inches
  • 2400 pixels = 8 inches

That is why simply saying that a certain number of pixels “equals” a certain number of inches can be misleading without specifying the resolution.

What Does 96 DPI Mean?

The 96 DPI value is especially relevant to web and CSS measurements. CSS defines one CSS inch as 96 CSS pixels, so 1 CSS pixel = 1/96 of a CSS inch.

This does not mean that 96 physical pixels on every monitor will occupy exactly one physical inch. Modern displays can have substantially different pixel densities, and a device pixel is not necessarily the same thing as a CSS pixel.

Pixel to Inches Conversion Formula

Use this formula when you already know the pixel count and resolution:

Inches = Pixels ÷ Pixels Per Inch

Or, using DPI terminology:

Inches = Pixels ÷ DPI

For instance, a 1500-pixel image at 300 DPI has a physical width of:

1500 ÷ 300 = 5 inches

At 150 DPI, the same 1500 pixels would represent:

1500 ÷ 150 = 10 inches

The pixel count has not changed; only the assumed physical density has changed.

Pixels to Inches for Images

If you’re working with an image, the most useful information is usually its pixel dimensions and resolution.

For example, suppose an image is 2400 pixels wide.

At 300 PPI:

2400 ÷ 300 = 8 inches

So the image can be placed at an 8-inch width at that resolution.

At 150 PPI:

2400 ÷ 150 = 16 inches

The same 2400-pixel image can therefore be represented at different physical sizes depending on the selected resolution.

This distinction is particularly useful when preparing photographs, posters, flyers, documents, or other graphics for printing.

Pixels vs. Inches: What Is the Difference?

Pixels describe the amount of digital image information. An image that is 1920 × 1080 contains 1920 pixels horizontally and 1080 pixels vertically.

Inches describe physical length.

The connection between the two depends on pixel density. For CSS, the specification uses a fixed relationship of 96 CSS pixels per CSS inch

For printed material, the physical size is determined using the image’s resolution, commonly expressed as DPI or PPI.

What DPI Should I Use?

There isn’t one correct DPI for every situation.

For web graphics, pixel dimensions are generally more important than a physical inch measurement. CSS uses 96 pixels per CSS inch as its defined relationship.

For printing, the appropriate resolution depends on the printer, document, image, and intended output. A higher PPI means more image pixels are allocated to each physical inch, while the total physical size decreases if the pixel dimensions stay unchanged.

For example, a 1200-pixel-wide image would measure:

  • 12 inches at 100 PPI
  • 8 inches at 150 PPI
  • 4 inches at 300 PPI
  • 2 inches at 600 PPI
